Essay 1: Perceptions of Psychology

The purpose of this assignment is to get a better insight into the perception of the field of psychology from others.

Interview 5 people and ask them the following questions:

1. How would you define the term psychology?
2. Name at least 3 types of careers in psychology
3. Name one psychologist & why they are famous.

The people you interview can be anyone your friends, roommates, parents, siblings, etc.

In your essay, describe the following for each person: (5 points per person interviewed, 25 points total)

• Demographics of the 5 people you interviewed.
• Age, sex, and current education status
• Their answers to the interview questions.

Summarize your data in the following chart.

Next, summarize if there are any trends or similarities you notice across the 5 people you interviewed. The purpose of this section is to for you to make sense of your data in a holistic way to see the bigger picture. (25 points)

Explain at least two reasons why you think people responded the way that they did. Be sure to explain your rationale. (25 points)

Lastly, do you agree with your respondents comments? Why or why not? (25 points)

Person 1: 19 year old, Female, High School Graduate

1. I would define psychology as the study of human behavior and mind
2. I believe there is clinical psychologist, school psychologist, and forensic psychologist
3. Sigmund Freud is famous cause he is the founder of psychoanalysis

Person 2: 29 year old, Female, Associates

1. I would define psychology as people that like to think they know what people minds are the how/why effect of a decision they do. I don’t like psychology they are people that think they know everything in my opinion they always ask a question to trick you because they have an answer on how/why you had that specific answer.

2. For some reason I want to say like – child psychology, family and couple psychology. But another part of me thinks is like therapy, people that works analyzing conducts for crimes, and at the hospitals.
