Environmental Science Question

For this assignment, you will submit the final version of your investigative essay. By this stage, your essay should be fully developed, analytically strong and revised using the feedback you received during peer review. This submission should reflect your best effort at synthesizing and analyzing research for an academic audience.

Your goal in this essay is to investigate what existing research says about your environmental topic. This essay should analyze patterns, agreements, tensions or debates within credible sources. It should move beyond explanation and demonstrate your ability to synthesize scholarly perspectives. Think of this essay as developing the literature review section of your final research paper. A reader should finish this essay with a clear understanding of how experts frame the issue, what evidence they rely on, and where the research currently stands.

To clarify expectations, it may help to revisit the distinction between the three types of essays in this course. Remember that an expository essay explains a topic objectively and provides background knowledge. An investigative essay analyzes and synthesizes existing research to examine how the issue is studied and understood. An argumentative essay takes a firm, debatable position and seeks to persuade the reader.

For this assignment, your essay should remain firmly within the investigative category. You are not arguing for a solution, nor are you simply explaining the issue. Instead, you are examining what researchers have found, how they approach the topic, and what broader patterns or gaps emerge across sources. Your role is to demonstrate critical engagement with research and to organize that research in a meaningful, analytical way before you move into making your own argument in the argumentative essay.
