Purpose and Overview:
Psychology is a science, and we know things from research studies.
ELI Review assignments are meant to help you learn how to read academic journal articles, pull out the relevant information, and summarize the research finding in a way that a non-specialist could understand.
Assignment:
STEP 1: Read the .
STEP 2: Read the Stenglin et al article (download on Canvas) without taking notes. Just try to understand what they did. You can highlight key points to come back to more fully
STEP 3: Read the article again, taking more detailed notes that answer the following questions
1) Q: What was the authors main question? Why did they do the study?
2) M: What did they do to test their research question?
3) R: What did they find?
4) I: What do those findings mean? How were they helpful for answering the research question?
STEP 4: Write a 300-450 word summary of the article as if you were explaining it to a non-specialist (e.g., imagine you are telling your roommate or sibling about it). You should be sure your summary includes all of the points from STEP 3 (Q, M, R, I). Make sure that when answering the questions you are always answering in your own words (no quoting the paper!) and avoiding jargon (e.g., dont name a complicated procedure or assessment, especially without describing it).
