Effect of Exercise on Rate of Cellular Respiration

Effect of Exercise on Rate of Cellular Respiration Lab This experiment will address how exercise (increased muscle activity) affects the rate of cellular respiration. Before beginning this lab activity, review the reaction for cellular respiration. What are the reactants and products of the reaction? Safety Notice: Before beginning this lab, please be aware that participation in physical activities, such as exercise, can pose health risks. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, or if you experience dizziness, shortness of breath, or any other discomfort during the activity, stop immediately. Do not engage in any activities that may cause harm or exacerbate health issues. Always prioritize your well-being and consult with a healthcare provider if you have concerns about participating in this lab. Measuring Your Resting Breathing Rate: 1. Count the number of breaths (1 breath = inhale + exhale) you take in 1 minute. Record this in Table 1 below. 2. Repeat this 2 more times and record these numbers in Table 1. 3. Average the 3 trials to get your average breathing rate. Record this in Table 1. Measuring Your Resting Heart Rate 4. Count the number of beats in 30 seconds and multiply that number by 2. Record this number in Table 2. a. At the wrist, lightly press the index and middle fingers of one hand on the opposite wrist, just below the base of the thumb, or b. At the neck, lightly press the side of the neck, just below your jawbone. 5. Repeat this 2 more times and record the data in Table 2. 6. Average the 3 trials to get your average heart rate. Measure Your Breathing Rate and Heart Rate After Exercise: 7. Exercise for 1 minute (jumping jacks, jogging, etc) 8. Measure your breathing rate and heart rate after exercise. a. Measure this one time after 1 minutes of exercise. Do not repeat two additional measures. b. Record the data in Tables 1 and 2. 9. Exercise for 1 additional minute (jumping jacks, jogging, etc) 10. Measure your breathing rate and heart rate after the second minute of exercise. a. Measure this one time after the second minute of exercise. Do not repeat two additional measures. b. Record the data in Tables 1 and 2. Data: Table 1 Breathing Rate Trial 1 Trial 2 Trail 3 Resting Average 1 minute Exercise 2 minutes Table 2 Heart Rate Trial 1 Trial 2 Trail 3 Resting Average 1 minute Exercise 2 minutes
