Specifically, each chapter assignment has 5 components, each component is worth 20 points: (20 points) Open by discussing why you chose this topic, and at the end (after #5 below) summarize your presentation of the topic providing closure for your audience. (20 points) Demonstrates understanding of topic from textbook, including defining it, giving examples, linking to research (explain & illustrate) (20 points) Share some unique perspective for how you see this topic relating to your own life, or those in your life (tell a real-life story) (20 points) Look up the topic in the popular press/social media and discuss whether you think the presentation of the topic is accurate, relevant, or misleading and alarmist, how does what is portrayed in the media similar or different from what you have read in the book? (Be the expert in evaluating what is out there about the topic (20 points) Raise an important concern about the topic (make an argument for why this topic is important to people; how it is affecting people, society, whether it is controversial, what needs to be done to address it, how will people’s lives be affected if steps are not taken to address the issue).
