Discussion 2 – CPNP 4000

Discussion Week 2

Nursing practice is guided by theoretical frameworks, professional competencies, and the ability to apply clinical reasoning and critical thinking in complex patient care situations. Nursing theories provide a foundation for understanding patient care and guiding nursing interventions, while non-nursing theories from disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and systems science can also influence healthcare practice. Additionally, professional nursing competencies and clinical judgment are essential for delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care.

For this discussion, reflect on the role of theory and clinical reasoning in professional nursing practice and address the following questions:

  1. Compare one nursing theoretical framework (such as Orems Self-Care Theory, Watsons Theory of Human Caring, or Roys Adaptation Model) with one non-nursing theoretical framework (such as systems theory or behavioral theory). How do these frameworks influence patient care or healthcare systems?
  2. Explain how nursing theory can be applied to clinical practice or healthcare systems to guide decision-making and improve patient outcomes.
  3. Discuss the importance of professional nursing competencies (such as QSEN competencies or AACN Essentials) in supporting safe and effective nursing practice.
  4. Analyze the role of clinical reasoning and clinical judgment in nursing decision-making. How do these skills help nurses respond to complex patient situations?
  5. Describe how critical thinking can be applied to a clinical or practice-based scenario to support safe patient care.

Please use the submission requirements for all the BSN classes discussions.
