- Provide a compelling narrative of the organizational issue, including next steps for further action and investigation.
- Describe the people and stakeholders who are involved in the organizational issue and your researchthey are the story’s characters. Note: Use pseudonyms and be sure to alter or omit any identifying details of your site.
- Who is most or least impacted? Who has the most to gain? To lose?
- Who are the power brokers? Who are the influencers? Who is empowered to make decisions? Who is aligned with whom?
- How does one negotiate change processes with these groups?
- What are the major resisters or relationship, social, or political barriers to change with regard to your issue?
- What have you learned through your interviews? Were people’s responses to your interview questions surprising?
- Reflect on the process of your research.
- Provide exhibits of existing information and quantitative and qualitative data, and subsequent data gathered and analyzed.
- Ensure your story or case is data driven and guided by factual information.
- Present your case as a work of nonfiction, presented in an engaging manner, informed and supported by the existing data, literature you have examined, and data you have collected.
- Include quotes from your interviews and draw on your memos or journal entries.
- Include support you have gleaned from the literature.
- Include appendices or exhibits that contain:
- Your interview questions.
- Your interview data analysis, including your transcripts, coding notes, and markings.
- Your tables and charts of quantitative data.
- Identify unanswered questions or questions that have arisen as a result of your data collection.
- Use PIEProof, Information, Examplesto support your assertions.
- Weave the findings of your analysis of existing and collected data into the narrative as you describe the situation, including representative quotes from your qualitative data, the literature, and the sites existing qualitative or quantitative data.
- Summarize how this narrative-creating activity has influenced understanding of the issue.
- What seems to be the problem?
- What are the systems components of the issue?
- What assumptions do people make about the problem? (When information is incompleteas it almost always ispeople make assumptions to fill in the gaps.)
- What has been accomplished in addressing this issue thus far?
- What institutional barriers to change exist with regard to this issue?
- Summarize how ethical considerations (bias elimination, data security, conflict of interest) related to data gathering, analysis, and storytelling were handled.
- You are also involved in the story. As Merriam and Tisdell note, The researcher is the primary instrument for data collection and analysis (Merriam & Tisdell, 2015, p. 16).
- As an investigator who wants to be aware of any bias and potential conflicts of interest that may lead to erroneous insights, you have been maintaining a journal or writing memos about your observations and reflections. Show how your discussion of the problem is informed by your data and the literature.
- Provide a conclusion that indicates the nature of continuous improvement that could result from this project.
- Present the dilemma and suggest potential courses of action.
- Develop and compare at least two feasible courses of action that might be taken as next steps to address the issue.
- Evaluate the pros and cons of each suggested course of action.
- Invite your reader to provide feedback, input, or suggestions. What would your reader do under the circumstances you have described?
- Address all components of the assignment prompt, using the assignment description to structure text.
- Organize the chronology of your story clearly, making sure you provide context and background at the beginning of the case so the reader can follow along.
- Provide context before introducing story elements.
- Use the cases you have read as a guide and provide rich detail that will help create a compelling and complete case.
