Format and Requirements

This is a Federal Government course. If answers are not related to federal (USA) elected officials, Federal state bills and laws, or the Federal judicial system, the assignment will not be accepted for a grade.

If the assignment is resubmitted after the due date because it was not completed correctly, the late policy will apply.

Your completed assignment must:

  • Be typed, using 12-point font and double-spaced
  • Be written in question and answer format
    • Each answer should be written in complete sentences and paragraphs
    • Example: The President of the United States is Joe Biden. The most important issue for President Biden is ensuring families receive medical care because…
  • Cite all sources, including in-text citations and a works cited section
  • Use your own words to explain what you have learned
    • Direct quotes should be limited
      • Only names, titles, and bill numbers may be quoted exactly
  • Refer to the rubric and the page in Canvas for additional guidance

PART 1: Who Represents You in Congress & Find a Bill

Objective:

You will identify your elected representatives in Congress and find a bill in the U.S. Congress that connects to an issue you care about. You will explain who represents you, what the bill is about, and what has happened with it so far.

Step 1: Who Represents You

Answer the following questions:

A. Who are the two U.S. Senators that represent the state of Texas?

B. Who is your U.S. House Representative (also called a Congressmember)?
Include the district number for the district where you live (must be in Texas).

C. List two issues that each of your three representatives (the two Senators and one House member) are focused on. Explain what each issue is and why it is important. (Total: 6 issues)

Step 2: Find a Bill

Find a current bill in the U.S. Congress (it can be active, passed, or inactive) and answer the following:

A. What is the bill title and number?

B. What is the bill trying to accomplish?
Read the title, summary, and full text to explain it in your own words.

C. What is the current status or outcome of the bill?
(For example: became law, passed one chamber, stopped in committee, etc.)

D. Why did you choose this bill?
Write at least one paragraph (45 complete sentences) explaining why this bill matters to you.


PART 2: Judicial Review Case

Objective:

You will choose a U.S. Supreme Court case that involved judicial review and explain what happened and why it mattered.

Select a Case and Answer:

A. Who were the parties involved in the case?

B. What was the date of the decision?

C. What was the outcome of the case?
(What did the Supreme Court decide?)

D. Why was the case challenged?
What constitutional right(s) were said to have been violated?
