By drawing upon the concept of intersectionality, discuss how multiple aspects of identity can combine and impact upon childhood inequalities. (1500 words)

Part A guidance

This TMA question asks you to draw on the concept of intersectionality to discuss how multiple aspects of identity can combine and impact upon childhood inequalities. The process word discuss in the title prompts you to pick the most important aspects, pointing out the strengths and limitations of different arguments.

You must highlight intersectionality, discussed in , and the ways that different aspects of identity (e.g. gender, race and disability) combine to impact inequalities.

When discussing how inequalities result from the combination of multiple aspects of children and young peoples identities, you may find it useful to consider different types of research evidence that contribute to knowledge about inequalities. For example, you may want to make links to how different forms of inequality and their impact can be studied using statistical measures (a form of quantitative research) of income and/or poverty indicators, in contrast to evidence that draws on interviews, personal reflections and children and young peoples voices (forms of qualitative research).

As this is a more extended essay question, you should take time to plan your answer, as this will help you to develop an introduction, conclusion and logical argument, which keep the focus on the question. You may find the workbook as well as the pre-recorded tutorial helpful in planning your answer.

We recommend that you attend an online tutorial, where tutors will cover key themes of the block, including advice on planning and writing assignments, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. If you are unable to attend a tutorial, you can watch a recording that will cover the content of the tutorial. You can view and book onto tutorials, and view recordings, in the area.

In addition, if you have specific questions about your assignment, you can also book to attend an optional E232 TMA Surgery (book via the area). This session allows you to ask specific questions that you have about the TMA. It will have a flexible format, led by the queries and questions that you raise rather than delivering a presentation about the TMA. This question-and-answer style surgery session does not replace tutorials, nor does it cover study skills such as referencing. Instead, it aims to provide an additional space to raise and discuss any prepared questions that you may have about the TMA. TMA surgery sessions will not be recorded.
