ESSAY COVERAGE

This essay covers the novels The Narrow Corner, by Somerset Maugham, and Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf. You may write on either or both of these novels, but these are the only literary texts you should consider in your essay. If you use other outside sources, such as biographical information or information from our class discussions, be certain to cite the source of that information in your essay. Also be certain to quote from the novel(s) and to cite your quotations appropriately with the MLA method.

ESSAY TOPIC

In this essay, consider any of the themes and formal issues that we discussed in our class regarding one or both of these novels. The themes and issues we discussed are listed on the class notes posted under Modules on Canvas. Formal issues we discussed include the relation of author to reader and the narrative style and strategy of the novel. You also might want to relate the themes you are interested in discussing to the manner in which those themes are conveyed formally in the text through things such as narrative approach, metaphor, description, characterization, plot, setting, story structure, etc.
