Fashion and Culture Appropriation

Research, critically analyse and develop an argument in answer to the following question:

• How does cultural appropriation highlight or reinforce cultural inequalities within fashion? Please discuss ways in which the fashion industry could ensure a more equitable and culturally sensitive approach.

Discuss and support your analysis with reference to specific case studies of brands / fashion designers where there have been cultural appropriation issues, and give examples of initiatives being taken to address this.

1. Select your topic area.
2. Research this area – it is essential that you include secondary research drawn from literature, journals where possible, and relevant articles or information sourced online. We will be looking for evidence that you have utilised key literature on your topic. Use the research log template to help you.
3. Plan your essay – what is the key focus or angle of your essay? Think about your point-of-view or what we call your developing your argument, this is important as it relates to LO3. This relates to developing your critical thinking skills when evaluating research evidence and developing arguments. Work on the basic structure of your essay. (General Intro/Main Body/Conclusion).
4. Write a first draft – try to get going with the main writing as soon as is possible and definitely between weeks 6-9 with the aim that you have a final version complete to show for your tutorial and submission in Week 10.
