Beyond the Gender Binary. Using Vaid-Menons life experiences as a springboard, alongside relevant concepts from the course, develop an intersectional analysis of the misconceptions people have about gender and how they affect people, especially trans and non-binary people in the United States of America and worldwide. Considering Vaid-Menons discussion of dismissal and all the cissexist and transmisogynist ideas people hold about gender and trans and non-binary people, how can nations, cultures, and communities move beyond the gender binary?
Ensure that your essay uses specific examples from the text and relates them to your life and the broader world around you. For example, how did Alok learn about gender and the social penalties for gender non-conformity? What role did institutions such as schools, families, and media (especially social media) play in their gender socialization and in reinforcing the gender binary? What role did they play in yours? Alok argues that it takes a lot of work to sustain the gender binary. How did Aloks experiences help you to understand how the gender binary is reinforced in everyday social interactions? Can you reflect on this in your life?
Remember, the questions above are meant as a guideline; while they must be addressed in the essay, students should not bullet-point their answers to the questions in the prompt. Essays should follow a standard essay format, and be comprised of an introduction (with a clear thesis), body paragraphs (with evidence from assigned materials), and a conclusion. Your conclusion is not a copy and paste of the introduction; it is a final discussion reflecting on the implications of your analysis.
Your essay should have at least four citations from Alok Vaid-Menons book, Beyond the Gender Binary. In addition to this, you may also cite the textbook, as necessary. Thus, the only sources that should be used for this essay are the sources below. There should be no outside sources or citations in your essay, only assigned materials.
