Knowledge and Reality

After reading/watching The Allegory of the Cave, what are some “caves” people live in today? Social media, culture, fear, traditions? What makes it hard to recognize them? What makes it hard to leave them?

example 1

There are many caves that exist in our modern world and society, I think the easiest one to point out would be the internet/social media and the obsession with getting attention, likes, engagement, and the overall addiction many have to it. Another would be culture or similarly what others think of you. Such “caves” can be very hard to recognize because many times adhering or even changing yourself because someone you look up to or your culture tells you too feels natural and with social media since everyone is on it and it brings joy and excitement to all it also feels natural. These kinds of caves go unnoticed and can easily be viewed as simply part of life and when one realizes that it is a cave something that has become basically second nature can be extremely hard to drop, and most times people would say that leaving them made them feel hollow or that they felt more free in the cave. Many things which seem “real” or “natural” can be a “cave” and that is what makes them so hard to see and so hard to escape from, and even harder to drag one out of.

Example 2

After reading the Allegory of the Cave, I came to the conclusion that the cave is a visual manifestation of the components necessary to create a false reality. It does not take someone living in a false reality to live in a false reality; it’s about believing it’s real. The cave has all the instruments needed to make people believe a fake reality because it tricks the senses and controls education. For example its not the fact that the prisoners see shadows; it’s the fact that they have only seen shadows and it’s all they have ever known. I truly believe that in the Allegory of the Cave, if the prisoners’ chains were broken and they could move their heads… they would not leave the cave. Because the reality is that it is easier to live in an illusion than walk into the unknown. People are scared of what they do not understand and this creates fear. Fear is one of the “Caves” in today’s society because it stops people from asking questions or going against the false system because they are afraid of what will happen if they do. Another “cave” is the education system indoctrinating these kids to the false reality so that they truly believe it is the truth when they are adults. Not only that but they punish the kids that do not fit into the false world and mak we an example out of them to stay in line. Social media is also a “cave” as well because it is used to push social standards and to spread false information to people in society. Social media affects children even more because they do not have the critical thinking skills to filter false information from facts with evidence. While most people are ignorant of these false realities and illusions, some are educated and aware but still choose to live with this knowledge because it is easy and comfortable. The question is, do those who are educated have a moral responsibility to help other prisoners break free from their mental chains, do they sit in the cave with this knowledge, or do they leave all they have known to live in reality… despite its new challenges?
