Personal Encounter with the Book (1 Page Max)
Craft a thoughtful introduction that invites your reader into your perspective. Avoid generic or mechanical openings. Instead:
- Start with a compelling personal experience, a story, a provocative quote, or a moment in the book that challenged you.
- Identify your central observation or thesis about the book. What struck you? What question does this book help you wrestle with?
- Use this as a lens for how you will engage with the book moving forward.
This section should sound like you. Use I statements and focus on how the book impacted your thinking, values, or assumptions.
Analysis and Evaluation (24 Pages)
Use the following prompts to structure your response. You may integrate them throughout your paper or address them in sectionsbut all must be covered.
- Authors Purpose and Effectiveness: What is the author trying to accomplish? What is the central argument? Does the author succeed?
- Key Themes and Arguments: What are the major messages or ideas? How do they relate to systems of oppression, racism, or diversity?
- Evidence and Credibility: What sources, stories, or research does the author use? Are they convincing, balanced, or incomplete?
- Personal Connection: What challenged you in this book? Where did you see yourself reflectedor not reflected?
- Professional Application: How can this book inform your work as a social worker (or other professional) committed to anti-racist, justice-oriented, and inclusive practice?
- Faith Integration: Compare and contrast the authors approach of a biblical understanding of race, justice, and human dignity to that of a secular one. How does Scripture shape a distinct view of racial diversity? Consider verses such as Genesis 1:27, Galatians 3:28, Revelation 7:9, or Micah 6:8.
Avoid copying summaries from the internet. Focus on your interaction with the ideas.
Conclusion and Critical Reflection (2 Pages)
Wrap up your analysis with synthesis and reflection:
- What was your biggest takeaway or area of growth?
- Did the book shift or confirm your understanding of race and diversity?
- Who would benefit from reading this book, and why?
- What are the implications for your personal faith journeyand professional development?
- How can the ideas in this book help you build equity, justice, and belonging in your future work?
- What unresolved questions do you still carry from the reading?
Reflect on your emotional, intellectual, and spiritual response to the book. The more genuine and thoughtful your insights, the stronger your paper.
