Writing Assignment: Being Cool and Black Culture Assignment Overview Black culture has long shaped what it means to be “cool”from fashion and music to language, attitude, and influence. But where does cool come from? What does it mean to be cool in a world that often copies Black culture while not always valuing Black people? In this assignment, youll write a 12 page reflective essay (500750 words) exploring the concept of coolness in connection to Black culture. Youll respond to two reflection questions that challenge you to think critically and personally. Background (Optional Viewing or Reading) Before writing, you can watch or read one of the following: Video: The History of Cool: How Black Culture Created American Style YouTube Article: Why Black Culture Defines Whats Cool in America Smithsonian Magazine or similar Song or Media Clip: Choose a Black-led song, fashion trend, or social media movement known for defining “cool.” Reflection Questions (Answer Both) What does it mean to be cool, and how has Black culture influenced that idea? Reflect on how coolness is expressed through music, style, language, attitude, or resistance. Is being cool just about trendsetting, or is it also about survival, creativity, or self-expression? What are the tensions between admiration and appropriation when it comes to Black culture and coolness? Consider how society or popular media often celebrates Black style or expression without honoring Black communities. What do you notice about who gets creditand who gets overlooked?
