Public art served a powerful purpose in representing Mexican national identity both during and after the Mexican Revolution (1910 – 1920). Mexican Modernists transformed European Modernism, retaining certain visual elements while injecting references to Mexican history, identity, and culture.
Murals became an important form of public art on the walls of public buildings, guided by the work of artists Diego Rivera, Jos Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Their motivation was to make art democratically accessible to people of all social classes.
