Biology 614 Applied Biotechnology Midterm – Spring 2026

Answer Questions 1-5 and then select the specific number of questions from each of the question sets.

o This exam is worth a total of 250 points and makes up 25% of your course grade.

Please specify which question (ex. Q1, Q2, etc.) you are answering at the top of each page. (-1 pt per question affected)

Start a new page for each question. In total you will answer 10 questions. (-1 pt per question affected)

Put your full name (first and last) in the header of the document so your name is on each page. (-1 pt per question affected)

Answer each question as completely and concisely as you can, being sure to provide substantial detail and/or supporting evidence.

o On average, each question should utilize approximately one page each (lining: single spaced), if not more.

o Use full sentences, no fragments or bullet points accepted. Any images included should be of your own work, not taken from another article. Points will be reduced for poor grammar. (-2 pts min per question affected)

o If a question has multiple components (i.e., a, b, c, etc.), please label and separate your responses on the page. (-2 pts per question affected)

o Do not reference an answer in a previous question. All answers will be graded separately.

o You may use notes, the textbook, papers/articles or any NON-human reference materials to assist you in your answers.

You may NOT collaborate with your classmates or other individuals including Internet discussion groups or other faculty.

You may NOT use any AI platforms (ex. ChatGPT).

Do not plagiarize. Just do your own work. Note that your submission is scanned/assessed with multiple plagiarism platforms. (Students found in violation of any of these will earn 0 pts on that question. No exception. Multiple infractions will result in reporting the incident to the Universitys Student Affairs/Academic Integrity.)

o Do not use quotations. All responses should be in your own words. (-2 pts min per question affected)

o Reference citation(s) used after each relevant sentence/statement (ex. OHare et al. 2026) and provide the full citation at the end of each question (at the bottom). (-5 pts per question affected)

Tip: If the information is not common knowledge or isnt your opinion, it should be cited.

Examples of common biological knowledge: DNA is transcribed into RNA. Transcription starts at the promoter site. PCR is used to amplify DNA.
