Explain what prompt you are answering and give appropriate background so that I
understand what you are discussing as well as where you conducted your research
or with whom.
Use one of the following terms within your paper: ethnocentrism, code-switching,
cultural relativism, culture, intersectionality, cultural construction. Start by defining
the term in your own words. Then show how it connects to your observations.
Write at least one full page connecting your own observations to things discussed in
the readings for the module. YOU MAY USE ARTICLES FROM EITHER MODULE 1 OR
2! Pick articles that you can clearly link, but write about them in a way that someone
who has never read them would understand. PLEASE DO NOT USE OUTSIDE
SOURCES!!! Stick to what we have read in class. No more than one direct quote. I
want to see you put things into your own words.
Interview over linguistics
Conduct an interview with someone who is bilingual to get better insight into how they use
language in their daily life. You might ask them about when they use one language versus
another, if there are words that dont have a good translation into another language, what
language they tend to think or dream in, or if there are times they code-switch what
language they use. Consider having them reflect on how their language reflects their
culture or is a part of their identity and why that is important to them. Are there times they
are afraid to speak a certain language or have been targeted for using a specific language?
Make sure to omit potentially sensitive information from your paper (such as immigration
status) and ask for permission to record the interview if you choose to do so in order to go
back and listen as you write your paper. Also be sure to ask for permission to use their real
name or if they would like you to use a pseudonym.
As you write your paper, give a little bit of background into the person you interviewed
(name, age, languages they speak, relationship to you). Pick out the parts of the interview
you thought were most impactful to share and analyze. Be sure to include at least one
direct quote from your interviewee.
You can use the interviewee name as “Jen:
