Rubric for the research paper
There will be one, 5-full page, research paper due at the end of the semester that is worth 20 points. What is a research paper? A research paper is an essay in which you explain what you have learned after exploring your topic in depth. In a research paper, you include information from sources such as books, articles, interviews, and Internet sites. You also use your own ideas, knowledge, and opinions. (definition retrieved from
). NOTE: In counting the required five, full pages the five does not include a reference or cover page which also needs to be included.
Plagiarism Checking Software
This assignment will be submitted to a plagiarism and Artificial Intelligence (AI) checking software system. You will need to submit the assignment early enough to ensure the system has time to return a similarity report. if your similarity report returns more than 20%, you will need to make changes and re-submit (possibly multiple times) all prior to the due date and time. Failure to do so will result in no less than a 25% reduction in your grade.
REMINDER: The use of AI in any form is strictly prohibited in this course.
The Research Paper is worth 20 points, students need to ensure all areas below are covered:
- Well researched = 4 points
- Well organized = 4 points
- Proper APA citations and references (no less than 3 one of which is the text book) = 4 points
- Proper formatting including cover page and reference page = 4 points
- Grammar, punctuation, spelling, tense agreement, etc., = 4 points
Each student shall select their topic from the list below:
- Prison: Describe five areas of prison life that you have researched and learned about.
- Interacting with Inmates: Professionalism, ethics, mental outlook and stress.
- Correctional facilities: Explain Physical Plant requirements and how they relate to Classification.
- Courts: Discuss Prisoner Rights, the history of court rules related to prisoner rights and the 14th amendment and due process.
Paper Requirements:
- 5 full pages long (five pages do not include the cover and reference pages which the paper must have). Failure to meet the minimum 5 full pages, will result in a % of the grades deducted before starting grading the rest of the paper.
- Double spaced.
- 11-point Arial or 12-point Calibri font.
- Page numbers on each page (top right corner see APA formatting).
- 1 margins all around. Please be advised Microsoft Word automatically creates 1.25 margins so you will need to change them.
- Proper writing skills are necessary, and this includes accurate grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and tense agreement. If I determine a paper has not been properly proofread, I will issue a zero.
- Reference citations are required. Students shall use at least 3 references (one which needs to be the textbook), and appropriate in-text citations, citing them properly within the paper and on a reference page according to APA standards.
- Paper shall be uploaded using DOC or PDF file extensions only.
- NOTE: Using a paper from a prior class is called “Self-Plagiarism” and is not allowed.
