2.1 Discussion: Investigating Culture and Belief

This week, you will explore a superstition! Choose one that you’re familiar with or one you’d like to respectfully learn more about as long as it meets the criteria for a superstition as defined in this module.

Choosing a lesser-known spiritual belief, rather than a major or familiar one, is important for broadening your understanding and fostering open-mindedness. By examining unfamiliar beliefs, you question assumptions and acquire new perspectives, enhancing critical thinking and broadening overall knowledge. This approach not only makes learning more engaging but also facilitates intellectual and cultural growth through exposure to a variety of global beliefs and practices.

To get started, you will need to choose a superstition and research it. If you’d like to see some examples of superstitions, take a look at this

Here’s how you can breakdown your discussion post:

Superstition and Summary:

  • Choose a superstition that meets the criteria and summarize its key aspects – its supernatural causality, where it comes from, what practices are involved. Was it once a part of spiritual or religious beliefs or practices? Was it merged with a modern religious or spiritual practice?

Cultural Transmission:

  • Explore how this superstition is passed down in the culture. Consider traditions, family practices, education, or cultural norms that help keep the superstition alive across generations.

Cultural Diffusion:

  • Examine how the superstition has spread or been influenced by other cultures. Beyond traditional methods like migration, colonization, and trade, consider other influences such as social media, festivals, and artistic expressions (i.e., songs, artwork/images, television/film). Provide specific examples.

Changes Over Time:

  • What is the superstition’s significance within the culture today as opposed to its historical significance?
